I wrote this song on New Year's Day, 2021. As much as anything, it was an expression of hope for the political year to come. As such, the song is optimistic, perhaps outrageously so. In fact, I wondered if it was too optimistic to be of value. Then I heard Joe Biden's inauguration address later in the month, and I was reminded that optimism is vital to us, even if it is a bit outrageous.

With all this in mind, we have "The Same Side of the Hill."

Lyrics

The Same Side of the Hill

We have lived like enemies since I can recall
All we ever wanted was to see the other fall
Like two drowning swimmers we’ve pulled each other down
But now it’s time to turn all this around

We have had our differences, that we can’t deny
And no one could describe us as seeing eye to eye
Call it making history, call it what you will
But I’ll want us on the same side of the hill

Yes I will, yes I will
Let’s call this battle’s over, and say we’ve had our fill
And when the dust has settled, and everything is still
I’ll want us standing on the same side of the hill

You can say I’m joking, tell me to act my age
Cuz we have both been choking on our separate kinds of rage
Talking to each other, it was like some bitter pill
So we camped out on the far sides of the hill

And we have fought to occupy this ground as armies do
You didn’t yield an inch to us and we didn’t yield to you
But as the world looks on at us and sadly shake their heads
We won’t die upon this mount, we’ll stand as one instead

Yes we will, yes we will
Let’s call this battle’s over, and say we’ve had our fill
And when the dust has settled, and everything is still
We’ll be standing on the same side of the hill

We won’t agree on everything, I’m not expecting that
I don’t see us pulling some rabbit from a hat
But people here are suffering, and that we can’t ignore
So we can’t keep on fighting like we don’t care anymore

There’s those who won’t believe us when we tell them what we’ve done
They’ll tell us that this battle simply can’t be won
But if they should come looking with voices harsh and shrill
They’ll find us on the same side of the hill

Yes they will, yes they will
Let’s call this battle’s over, and say we’ve had our fill
And when the dust has settled, and everything is still
They’ll find us on the same side of the hill

So if you have grown tired of all this useless noise
And you long to raise your voices in a chorus of real joy
Then take this invitation, make it your strong will
And we’ll join you on the same side of the hill

Yes we will, yes we will
Let’s call this battle’s over, and say we’ve had our fill
And when the dust has settled, and everything is still
We’ll be standing on the same side of the hill
We should be standing on the same side of the hill
